Nanjing Jinling receives orders for 4 methanol fueled bulk carriers from Finnish shipowners

On October 9th, Finnish shipping company ESL Shipping announced that it has placed an order for four 17000 deadweight ton new methanol fuel bulk carriers at China Merchants Industrial Nanjing Jinling.
The total value of these new ships is approximately 186 million euros (approximately 1.441 billion yuan), and they are scheduled to be delivered from the third quarter of 2027 to the first quarter of 2028. The contract also includes alternative orders for multiple ships of the same type.
This type of ship is 150 meters long and has a 1A ice class symbol. By using green hydrogen based electricity to produce methanol or bio methanol, these ships can operate completely without using fossil fuels. The new ship design and comprehensive model testing were jointly completed with the Finnish ship design company Deltamarin and the Swedish SSPA model testing facility.
In addition, ESL Shipping is also involved in ship design to ensure that the vessel fully meets future needs. Most of the key equipment, such as power systems including battery hybrid drives, cargo handling equipment, and many other leading technologies, come from European companies.
Mikki Koskinen, General Manager of ESL Shipping, stated that the company's strategic focus is to lead in sustainable development and have the ability to develop and provide reliable infrastructure for the Nordic green transformation industry covered in ice and snow.
It is understood that ESL Shipping has a history of 75 years and is a leading dry bulk shipping company in the Baltic region. As early as 2021, ESL Shipping announced its emission reduction targets, aiming to reduce emissions intensity per ton mile by 50% by 2023 and achieve net zero emissions by 2050. Afterwards, the company advanced its net zero emissions target to 2040.
Previously, the company had ordered hybrid electric bulk carriers at Chowgule&Company Private Limited shipyard in India, with the first four already in operation and the remaining eight to be delivered by 2026.
It is worth mentioning that ESL Shipping has previously collaborated with Nanjing Jinling for shipbuilding. In 2018, Nanjing Jinling delivered two of the world's first 25000 ton LNG high-pressure dual fuel general cargo ships to ESL Shipping.
Including the latest orders, Clarkson's data shows that Nanjing Jinling currently holds 75 orders of 2.37544 million deadweight tons, including 33 automobile transport ships, 12 bulk carriers, 8 oil tankers, 8 multi-purpose ships, 8 methanol fuel refueling ships, 4 general cargo ships, and 2 roll on/roll off ships, with delivery scheduled until 2028. The delivery schedule is scheduled until 2028.
