According to the latest data from the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Greek shipping still ranks first in the world in terms of capacity.

The Greek fleet, with 4992 vessels and a total deadweight tonnage (dwt) of 394977181 tons, continues to maintain a global lead, occupying 16.9% of the global market share.

Following closely behind is the Chinese fleet, with 6600 vessels and a total deadweight tonnage of 309870897 tons, with a global market share of 13.3%.

Compared with 2023, the market share of the Greek fleet has slightly declined, from 17.4% to the current level, and the market share of the Chinese fleet has also slightly decreased from 13.4%.

The UNCTAD report points out that the Greek fleet is constantly expanding and modernizing, emphasizing energy efficiency, and equipping ships with cutting-edge environmental technologies. According to the annual report of the Greek Shipowners' Association (UGS), Greece has the world's largest fleet of alternative fuel ships.

Japan ranks third with a global share of 10.4%, followed by Singapore with a global share of 6.3%.

As of early 2024, the global fleet of cargo ships and non cargo ships with a total tonnage of 100 tons or more has reached approximately 109000, with a carrying capacity of 2.4 billion tons, of which bulk carriers account for 42.7% and oil tankers account for 28.3%.
