The latest order for 6 of the world's largest car transport ships from Hyundai Glovis, the largest car transport company in South Korea, has fallen to Guangzhou Shipbuilding International.

On May 27th, Guangzhou Shipbuilding International disclosed that in mid May, it jointly signed an effective order for six 10800 LNG dual fuel vehicle transport ships (PCTC) with China Shipbuilding Industry Trading Co., Ltd. and Hyundai GLOVIS Co., Ltd. of South Korea.

Hyundai Glovis decided in April this year to invest an additional $750 million (approximately RMB 5.431 billion) to build six 10800 LNG dual fuel vehicle transport ships, with the new ships scheduled to be delivered before December 31, 2028. At that time, Hyundai Glovis did not disclose which shipyard would place an order for shipbuilding.

Based on a total price of 750 million US dollars, the latest six orders for a single ship are priced at approximately 125 million US dollars, which is slightly higher than the price of 122 million US dollars per ship for the first 12 ships of the same type ordered by Hyundai Glovis at the end of last year at Guangzhou Shipbuilding International and Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding.

It is understood that in early December last year, Hyundai Glovis signed 6+4 new shipbuilding contracts for 10800 LNG dual fuel vehicle transport ships with Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding and Guangzhou Shipbuilding International at the 2023 China International Maritime Exhibition, respectively, through Seaspan Corporation and Hanxin Shipping (formerly HMM) as ship owners. The new ship is planned to be delivered gradually from 2026 to 2027.

Earlier this year, Seaspan ordered two more 10800 car transport ships from Guangzhou Shipbuilding International, and these two new ships will be delivered in 2027.

It is understood that this type of ship is designed by the Shanghai Shipbuilding Design Institute, with fourteen layers of car decks, five of which are lifting or movable decks, possessing excellent loading capacity for ultra-high and overweight roll on/roll off cargo. Multi layer car decks are suitable for loading various new energy vehicles such as hydrogen energy vehicles, compressed natural gas (CLNG) vehicles, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) vehicles, etc. Some decks are suitable for carrying packaged dangerous goods and refrigerated containers, greatly improving the diversity and flexibility of cargo loading. In addition to using LNG dual fuel, this series of ships will also have ammonia fuel reserve and methanol fuel reserve designs.
