The global fleet of super large container ships has doubled in just 5 years and is expected to continue explosive growth with the order of 43 new ships.

According to Alphaliner, since Maxus launched the 21000-24232TEU ultra large container ship in 2013, the large container fleet has been growing and expanding.

According to a report released by Alphaliner, there are currently 186 ultra large container ships at sea with 24000TEU (MGX-24) and slightly smaller 23000TEU (MGX-23).

The report states, "In the past few years, ultra large container ships have become the backbone of Asia Europe trade, slowly but steadily replacing the new Panamax ships on the main route."

Nowadays, Mediterranean Shipping (MSC) is the shipping company with the largest number of ultra large container ships, with a capacity of 1.1 million TEUs. Maersk ranks second with a super large capacity of 600000 TEUs.
Out of the 43 new ships in the order, only 6 will use traditional fuel. The rest will use LNG or methanol to reserve power.
