Shanghai Port Energy is collaborating with China Merchants Ship to promote the regular bunkering of methanol fuel for Ro-Ro vessels.
On December 10, the methanol bunkering vessel “Hai Gang Zhi Yuan,” operated by Shanghai Port Energy, delivered 2,000 tons of methanol fuel to the 9,300-vehicle methanol dual-fuel car carrier “Shen Rong (CM SHEN ZHEN),” owned by China Merchants Ship, at the Haitong Terminal in Waigaoqiao, Shanghai. This marks another successful operation for “Hai Gang Zhi Yuan,” following its completion of methanol bunkering for its sister vessel “Gang Rong” in September of this year, and signifies that methanol bunkering services for Ro-Ro vessels at Shanghai Port have officially entered a normalized phase.
After completing its delivery in Nantong on December 9, the vessel “Shen Rong” arrived at the Waigaoqiao Port Area in Shanghai. Under the coordinated efforts and support of all parties, the vessel “Hai Gang Zhi Yuan” efficiently completed the entire process—from berthing and docking to fueling. During the operation, the Navigation Division, the Hazardous Materials Prevention Division, and the Command Center of the Shanghai Maritime Bureau provided professional guidance and support throughout the entire process. The Pudong Maritime Bureau offered real-time command and coordination, drawing on previous operational experience to rigorously implement safety measures in terms of weather warnings and service support, thereby ensuring that the entire operation was safe and smooth.
This simultaneous methanol bunkering operation for roll-on/roll-off vessels at the Waigaoqiao Port Area has enhanced Shanghai Port’s comprehensive service capabilities in green energy supply and is helping to further improve the development of a low-carbon shipping service system.
The "Shen Rong," operated by China Merchants Ship, has a total length of 219.9 meters and a molded breadth of 37.7 meters. Its designed loading capacity is 9,300 standard vehicle spaces, though it can actually accommodate up to 9,492 vehicles. The total vehicle-loading area measures 78,416 square meters—roughly equivalent to the size of 11 standard soccer fields. The vessel is equipped with 13 vehicle-deck levels, including three adjustable decks, enabling convenient and efficient loading and unloading of passenger cars, battery electric vehicles (BEVs), fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), buses, trucks, forklifts, roll-on/roll-off trailers, and road trailers.
The vessel “Shen Rong” is the second of six methanol dual-fuel powered car carriers ordered by China Merchants Ship. Built by China Merchants Shipbuilding, it was delivered earlier this month, marking a significant milestone for China Merchants Ship as it transitions from “first-ship breakthrough” to “mass-scale deployment” in the green Ro-Ro shipping sector. The “Shen Rong” is equipped with a methanol dual-fuel propulsion system that meets the International Maritime Organization’s Tier III emission standards—the strictest globally applicable regulations. When fueled by green methanol, greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by more than 70%. This technological approach is increasingly attracting attention in the global shipping industry’s low-carbon transition, particularly within the specialized segment of automotive Ro-Ro transportation.
As the global shipping industry accelerates its green transformation, Shanghai Port Energy is continuously enhancing its capacity to provide green energy bunkering services. Relying on the port’s geographical advantages and extensive service experience, the company will continue to deepen cooperation with various stakeholders, jointly building a green, safe, and efficient shipping fuel supply system and contributing more “Shanghai strength” to the sustainable development of the global shipping industry.
