Mawei Shipbuilding Completes Trial Voyage of 7,500-Vehicle Dual-Fuel Car Carrier and Returns Successfully
On December 20, the 7,500-vehicle LNG dual-fuel Ro-Ro vessel (XSI463J), built by Mawei Shipbuilding under Fujian Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, successfully completed all its sea trial programs and returned safely to port. This trial voyage, which ran from December 17 to 20, efficiently concluded in a tight three-day-and-three-night schedule, with both oil and gas trials conducted in a single round.
The 7,500-vehicle LNG dual-fuel Ro-Ro vessel has a total length of 199.9 meters, a molded length between perpendiculars of 195.6 meters, a molded breadth of 38 meters, a molded depth of 14.8 meters, a design draft of 8.65 meters, and a maximum draft of 10 meters. The vessel’s propulsion system is designed with a single engine and single propeller, featuring an LNG dual-fuel main engine, a single bow thruster, and an electrically powered Ro-Ro system. The cargo hold is equipped with 13 vehicle decks. The vessel is primarily used for transporting various types of vehicles—including heavy-duty trucks—as well as packaged hazardous goods. It can also carry new-energy vehicles fueled by hydrogen and natural gas on decks 11, 12, and 13. The vessel is classed by the American Bureau of Shipping.
The success of the sea trials is a clear testament to the project team’s thorough implementation of refined management. Building on the rich experience gained from the construction and sea trials of earlier similar vessels, the project team meticulously planned and scientifically coordinated the entire process. By developing a detailed test outline and a precise schedule, and by optimizing the sequence of key commissioning activities, they achieved seamless integration and efficient flow among core tasks such as speed testing, LNG fuel mode switching, and maneuverability performance trials. This significantly enhanced the utilization efficiency of the sea trial period, enabling the team to complete the mission ahead of schedule and successfully meet the original timetable.

During the sea trial, all ship systems operated smoothly and reliably, demonstrating outstanding overall performance. The on-site service engineers, the shipowner’s supervisory representatives, the classification society surveyors, and the ship’s project team worked closely and collaboratively to ensure the efficient completion of the trial tasks.
This vessel is a key product through which Mawei Shipbuilding is closely following the green shipping trend and actively expanding into the clean-energy vessel market. The successful and efficient completion of its sea trials not only highlights the company’s solid technical expertise and outstanding project management capabilities in the construction of Ro-Ro vessels for automobiles, but also lays a robust foundation for the smooth delivery of subsequent vessels.
