The first clean-energy container ship on the China–Europe Arctic Express has arrived safely in Europe.
On October 11, the “TIGER MAANSHAN,” the first clean-energy container vessel in Haijie Shipping’s CAX China–Europe Arctic Express service, departed from Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, sailed north through the Bering Strait, successfully completed its polar voyage across the Arctic Ocean, and safely berthed at the Port of Felixstowe in the United Kingdom.
The Arctic shipping route is characterized by complex sea conditions and highly variable ice and weather patterns, posing extreme challenges to vessel equipment performance, fleet operational capabilities, and risk‑management systems. To ensure the safe and efficient execution of the voyage, a specialized verification of the dual‑fuel system was completed prior to departure; during transit, ice and meteorological conditions were continuously monitored, and the navigation strategy was dynamically adjusted. Through rigorous end‑to‑end control, the vessel successfully withstood the myriad challenges posed by the Arctic’s ever‑changing maritime environment, culminating in the successful completion of this polar crossing.
The vessel “Haijie Ma’anshan” uses LNG as its primary fuel, integrating green and environmentally friendly principles throughout the entire voyage. Compared with conventional oil‑fueled ships, it significantly reduces emissions of sulfur compounds, black carbon, particulate matter, and other pollutants, thereby minimizing the impact of shipping operations on polar regions and fostering the coordinated development of deep‑sea transport and polar ecological conservation.
This voyage is carrying a substantial volume of Chinese new‑energy export cargoes, including energy‑storage systems and power batteries. By leveraging the Northeast Passage through the Arctic, the maritime route between Asia and Europe has been shortened, significantly improving overall logistics efficiency and establishing an efficient, green logistics corridor for the export of domestically produced new‑energy products to Europe.
As CAX’s regular weekly Arctic Express service gains steady momentum, the Northern Sea Route is transforming from a geographical concept into a reliable and sustainable green trade corridor between China and Europe.
