Monaco-based shipowner places its first order! Guangzhou Shipyard International secures another two oil tanker orders.
On October 23, CSSC Guangzhou Shipyard International successfully secured an order from Monaco-based Transocean Maritime Agencies for the construction of two 50,000‑dwt chemical/oil tankers. Monaco, a global hub for shipping finance and home to a roster of high‑quality, premium‑class shipowners, is one of the core nodes in the international shipping industry. This contract marks the first-ever order won by Guangzhou Shipyard International in the Monaco shipping market.
Guangzhou Shipyard International has not disclosed details such as the contract price or delivery schedule. According to sources, the two vessels are scheduled for delivery by the end of 2029, with each costing over US$45 million, bringing the total contract value to more than US$90 million (approximately RMB 601 million).
For reference, Clarkson’s data show that the current price of a newbuild MR‑type product tanker with a deadweight tonnage of 47,000–51,000 is approximately US$52.5 million (about RMB 351 million), up roughly 8% from US$48.5 million at the same time last year.
Transocean was founded in the 1960s and is a long-established family‑owned company headquartered in Monaco. It specializes in dry bulk and tanker shipping and currently operates a fleet of 15 vessels. Last year, the company made its debut in the container‑ship market by placing an order with Huangpu Wenchong for two 1,900‑TEU container vessels, scheduled for delivery in 2028.
Guangzhou Shipyard International’s order marks Transocean’s first-ever tanker construction. The company entered the tanker market in 2018 and currently operates five MR‑type product tankers built between 2009 and 2010.
Guangzhou Shipyard International stated that this contract signing fully underscores the recognition of its shipbuilding expertise, quality‑control capabilities, and on‑time delivery performance, laying a solid foundation for the company to further expand into the high‑end Mediterranean and European shipping markets and serving as an excellent benchmark for developing similar target customers.
According to reports, Guangzhou Shipyard International is the leading domestic shipbuilder of MR‑type product tankers. Clarkson’s data shows that, in the 25,000–55,000 dwt MR/Handysize product tanker segment, GSI ranks first globally with a backlog of 60 vessels, outpacing HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (37 vessels) and HD Hyundai Vietnam Shipbuilding (32 vessels).
Excluding the latest orders, according to Clarkson’s data, Guangzhou Shipyard International currently holds a total of 145 vessels amounting to 9.38 million deadweight tons, comprising 87 oil tankers, 17 container ships, 26 car carriers, 8 ro-ro passenger ferries, 4 offshore support vessels, and 3 other types of ships, with delivery schedules extending through 2031.
