MOL acquired its second ultra-luxury cruise ship from Seabourn.
Recently, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines announced the acquisition of the second ultra-luxury cruise ship "Seabourn Sojourn" from Seabourn Cruise Line, further expanding its cruise fleet.
The "Seabourn Sojourn" is 198.19 meters long, 25.6 meters wide, with a gross tonnage of 32,477 tons, featuring 229 guest rooms and a capacity of 458 passengers. According to the plan, the ship will join the Mitsui O.S.K. Lines cruise brand MITSUI OCEAN CRUISES fleet under a new name at the end of 2026 after completing its operational tasks with Seabourn Cruise Line.
This ship is the sister ship of the first ultra-luxury cruise ship "MITSUI OCEAN FUJI" (formerly "Seabourn Odyssey") acquired by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines from Seabourn Cruise Line in 2023, also built by the Italian T. Mariotti shipyard and delivered for operation in 2010.
The "MITSUI OCEAN FUJI" held its naming and inaugural ceremony at the end of last year and officially entered service. Thanks to the success of the inaugural voyage of the "MITSUI OCEAN FUJI", Mitsui O.S.K. Lines decided to acquire a second ship, laying the foundation for business expansion before the company's future new shipbuilding plans.
The newly acquired "Seabourn Sojourn" will also undergo refurbishment and upgrades before entering official service and will be re-registered as a vessel flying the Japanese flag, becoming Mitsui O.S.K. Lines' third cruise ship after the "Nippon Maru" (built in 1990) and the "MITSUI OCEAN FUJI".
According to the plan, the new ship will offer a variety of short domestic routes in the Sea of Japan and surrounding areas, providing travelers with a convenient travel experience. The ship will take passengers to exciting ports of call, allowing them to deeply experience Japan's local culture and traditions while avoiding the common overcrowding issues of large cruise ships.
It is understood that Mitsui O.S.K. Lines disclosed its cruise business expansion plan at the end of 2022, positioning the cruise business as a new growth area. In March 2023, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines acquired the second-hand ship "Seabourn Odyssey" from Seabourn Cruise Line and refurbished it; in October of the same year, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines announced the establishment of a new cruise brand "MITSUI OCEAN CRUISES".
In addition to acquiring second-hand cruise ships, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines also plans to order two new cruise ships that can accommodate 600 passengers to expand its cruise business and meet domestic and international cruise demands.
