MOL's next-generation LNG dual-fuel car carrier delivered
Recently, the "TOURMALINE ACE," a 7,000-vehicle capacity LNG dual-fuel car carrier built by Tadotsu Shipyard, a subsidiary of Imabari Shipbuilding in Japan, for Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), was completed and delivered.
This is one of a total of 11 next-generation dual-fuel car carriers in the "BLUE" series that MOL is building at shipyards in Japan. It will be deployed on the Japan-Europe route, supporting global logistics.
The vessel is 199.93 meters long, 38 meters wide, and 38.76 meters deep, with a deadweight of 18,467 tons and a gross tonnage of 77,695 tons. It is equipped with a 6S60ME-C10.5-GI main engine, has a service speed of approximately 18 knots, flies the Liberian flag, and is classed by ClassNK (Nippon Kaiji Kyokai).
The ship uses environmentally friendly LNG as fuel, reducing CO2 emissions by 25-30% compared to traditional powered vessels, virtually eliminating sulfur oxide emissions, and reducing nitrogen oxide emissions by 80-90% through the use of an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system. The LNG fuel tank continuously produces evaporated gas, which can be used for generators and boilers, further improving the ship's environmental performance.
The new vessel adopts a bulkhead-less structure and a straighter configuration with wider ramps than traditional designs, making the vehicle travel path simpler and clearer, improving safety and loading/unloading efficiency. The liftable deck can adjust its height, allowing it to carry not only passenger cars but also trucks, trailers, and other high-profile vehicles.
It is understood that MOL owns the world's largest fleet of car carriers, with a current capacity of approximately 100 vessels, including smaller vessels operating in Europe. Since 2021, MOL has begun ordering the new generation "BLUE" series LNG dual-fuel car carriers; the lead ship built in Japan, the "CERULEAN ACE," was delivered by Shin Kurushima Dockyard in March 2024.
