New Yangzi Shipbuilding delivers second 8200TEU dual-fuel container ship to Pacific Basin Shipping
On May 18, the "KOTA OCEAN", the second 8200TEU thin-film LNG dual-fuel container ship built by New Yangzi Shipbuilding of Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group for Pacific International Lines (PIL) of Singapore, left the shipyard and was delivered for operation.
The project was initiated by Mr. Zhang Songsheng, Executive Chairman of PIL, in December 2023. Sea trials were successfully completed on April 22, 2025, with all test results meeting design standards. From the start of construction to the delivery after sea trials, this success is due to the hard work of all employees of Yangzijiang Shipbuilding and the strong support from PIL, Lloyd's Register, Shanghai Ship Research and Design Institute, GTT, and other relevant parties.
This vessel is the second of four 8200TEU thin-film LNG dual-fuel container ships in the "O-class" series built by Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group for PIL. The first sister ship, "KOTA OASIS", was delivered in early May. This type of vessel is a new generation of green, energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly container ship jointly developed and built by Shanghai Ship Research and Design Institute (SDARI) and Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group. It is flexible in operation, capable of handling both feeder and ocean routes, and its performance indicators such as speed, load capacity, and number of heavy containers exceed contract requirements.
The vessel has an overall length of 260.0 meters, a molded breadth of 45.6 meters, a molded depth of 24.7 meters, a design draft of 12.5 meters, and a structural draft of 15.5 meters. The maximum container capacity is 8350TEU, including 5562TEU in the hold and 2788TEU on deck. It can carry 850FEU of refrigerated containers, including 200FEU in the hold and 650FEU on deck. The cargo hold structure, hatch covers, and lashing bridges are integrated, allowing for flexible loading of refrigerated containers, dangerous goods containers, standard containers, and high containers without loss of container slots.
This vessel type is the first batch of Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group's container ships equipped with GTT thin-film tanks. The fuel tank is also suitable for ammonia fuel loading and has received the corresponding ammonia-ready notation. This LNG dual-fuel container ship represents the cutting-edge design technology and construction level of medium-sized container ships. The ship is equipped with Wärtsilä's LNG dual-fuel gas supply system, meeting the world's strictest emission requirements (reducing carbon emissions by 20%, nitrogen oxides by 85%, and sulfur oxides by 99% compared to traditional fuel-powered container ships), and the EEDI meets the Phase III requirements in advance.
The new ship's main engine is equipped with an advanced iCER system, which ensures that the fuel mode meets Tier III emission requirements for nitrogen oxides and reduces methane slip in LNG mode, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The generator is equipped with an SCR system, which also meets IMO emission requirements for nitrogen oxides.
On May 14, in the presence of representatives from all parties, the "KOTA OCEAN" was signed and delivered. Mr. Wei Bing, Assistant General Manager of PIL's Newbuilding Department, and Mr. Du Chengzhong, Deputy General Manager and General Manager of New Yangzi Shipbuilding of Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group, signed the delivery documents on behalf of their respective parties.
