This shipyard built! Ustan signed a new contract for the design of cable ships
Recently, Singaporean shipowner Megamas Resources signed a design contract for a cable laying vessel (CLV) with Norwegian ship design company Ulstein Design & Solutions.
Megamas had previously signed a letter of intent in May this year with German shipyard Lloyd Werft Bremerhaven for the construction of 1+1 cable laying vessels, with the first vessel scheduled for delivery by the end of 2027. This type of vessel will adopt the ULSTEIN SX228 design, with a length of 121.7 meters, a width of 23 meters, a deadweight tonnage of 8200 tons, and a cable capacity of 5500 tons.
The new vessel is specifically designed for fiber optic cable laying and is prepared for future cable operations, including a turntable integrated into the lower deck of the cable hold. The vessel is equipped with two cable laying lines and associated cable handling equipment, as well as an ROV hangar for a cable trenching machine, a 50-ton A-frame lifting system, and a 120-ton bollard pull capacity for subsea ploughing operations.
This project was jointly developed with Crewstone International Private Equity & Investment Company, aiming to address the global shortage of specialized offshore vessels. Such vessels will play a crucial role in supporting the renewable energy and subsea communication industries.
The vessel's design complies with DNV's Clean Design and Recyclable class notations, reflecting Megamas's commitment to green shipping and sustainable operations.
It is understood that Megamas Resources was founded by a highly qualified, experienced, and innovative professional team, providing comprehensive engineering lifecycle services for the marine, offshore oil and gas industries.
Tiew Sien Kheng, Managing Partner at Megamas, stated that the design contract with Ulstein is an important milestone that, following the signing of the letter of intent with Lloyd Werft in May, paves the way for the construction of this advanced multi-purpose cable vessel.
