New Yangzi Shipbuilding delivers Zodiac's second LR2 tanker
On August 17, the second 114,000 DWT LR2 oil tanker “BELGRAVE SQUARE”, built by Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group's New Yangzi Shipbuilding for Zodiac shipowners, was unmoored from the shipyard dock and delivered for operation.
The ship started construction in early July 2024, was docked for outfitting at the end of December of the same year, undocked at the end of April 2025, and successfully completed sea trials in mid-July 2025. All test results met the design standards. On August 15, the signing and delivery ceremony of the “BELGRAVE SQUARE” was completed.
With the delivery of the sister ship “BERKELEY SQUARE” in early July, Yangzijiang Shipbuilding has successfully completed the construction of two 114,000 DWT LR2 oil tanker projects for Zodiac shipowners.
It is understood that this type of ship has a total length of 248.8 meters, a molded width of 44.0 meters, a molded depth of 21.5 meters, a structural draft of 15.0 meters, a design draft of 13.5 meters, and a design speed of 14.5 knots.
The design and construction of the new ship incorporates the latest technological achievements: (1) The wave-making resistance is reduced by CFD multi-round iterative optimization of the hull form, combined with the newly designed large-diameter propeller and energy-saving devices such as pre-swirl duct and PCT, the overall efficiency is improved by about 7% compared with the previous generation of ship types. (2) Under the use of conventional fuels, the ship's energy efficiency design index EEDI is 5.5% lower than the benchmark value, meeting the requirements of EEDI Phase III. (3) The structural design of the ship meets the latest CSR-H. Through structural optimization, the structural weight is greatly reduced compared with the previous generation of ship types, and it has a larger deadweight and cargo capacity. (4) The ship is equipped with scrubbers and HPSCR to meet the latest SOX and NOX emission requirements. (5) The ship optimizes the mooring arrangement and cargo oil system to improve the efficiency of shipowners' operations; reduces vibration and noise to improve the living comfort of crew members; and improves energy saving and environmental protection effects by equipping a medium-voltage shore power system.
Through the application of the above new technologies, this type of ship has the advantages of green energy saving, large loading capacity, and high degree of intelligence. The indicators such as fuel consumption, speed, and comfort have reached the advanced level in the industry.
