Reduce emissions by 90%! World's first commercial wind powered roll on/roll off ship launched

Recently, the world's first new sail powered ro/ro ship "NEOLINER ORIGIN" built by Türkiye's RMK Marine shipyard for French shipping company Neoline Armateur was launched.
The construction contract for the NEOLINER Origin will take effect in January 2023, and construction will begin in November of the same year. In February 2024, the ship held a keel laying ceremony at RMK Marine shipyard. According to the plan, the ship will be delivered for operation this summer, with its first trial voyage taking place between the ports of Saint Nazaire, Saint Pierre et Miquelon, Baltimore, and Halifax.
The NEOLINER ORIGIN is 136 meters long and 24.2 meters wide, with a lane length of 1200 meters (2.8 meters wide). It can accommodate 265 20 foot containers and has a maximum load capacity of 5300 tons. It can carry different types of cargo, with 13 crew members and 12 passengers, and is equipped with a life support system.
The ship was designed by the ship design and engineering company Mauric and is equipped with the Solid Sail hard sail system developed by French shipyard Chantiers de l'Atlantique, which will integrate Anglo Belgian (ABC) engines as auxiliary power. Two foldable carbon masts up to 76 meters high will be installed on the ship, with a total sail surface area of 3000 square meters. It will also be equipped with a retractable anti drift device manufactured by Four é Lagadec and an ultra efficient meteorological route system developed by D-ICE Engineering.
Relying on sail propulsion and an economical speed of 11 knots, the NEOLINER ORIGIN can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90% compared to traditional ships of the same size, and produce almost no sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter emissions.
RMK Marine Shipyard stated that under the strong promotion of Neoline Armateurs, the project will be launched in 2023 with the vision of building a greener and more sustainable future. This 136 meter long roll on/roll off ship will reduce fossil fuel consumption by over 80% and will utilize wind power as its primary driving force.
It is reported that Neoline Armateur was founded by Neoline D é evelopment in 2021, and its shareholders also include Dafei, ADEME Investissement, Corsica Ferries, and Louis Hardy SAS from France. The company's goal is to become the world's first professional operator of modern wind powered cargo ships. Its founding purpose is to rely on wind power to significantly reduce the cost of maritime transportation, and will provide funding and operational services for the "NEOLINER Origin".
