The first 10,000-ton-class nearshore electric vessel has begun construction at the Chizhou Intelligent Manufacturing Base.

On June 30, a 9,800‑DWT new‑energy bulk carrier jointly developed by San Dian Shui New Energy and Shenzhen Weiqiao New Energy Shipbuilding held its groundbreaking ceremony at the Chizhou Intelligent Manufacturing Base. This marks the first vessel to begin construction since the completion of San Dian Shui’s Chizhou facility. Representatives from Anhui Province’s industry authorities, the Anhui Provincial Shipbuilding Association, upstream and downstream partners, and both companies gathered on site to witness the official launch of this flagship near‑shore new‑energy vessel.

According to reports, this vessel is a near‑shore, low‑carbon ship type jointly developed by the two parties through the integration of their respective industrial strengths. It has an overall length of 109.8 meters, a length between perpendiculars of 107.5 meters, a molded breadth of 26.8 meters, and a molded depth of 7.2 meters. Equipped with a dual‑propulsion system combining diesel and lithium‑ion batteries, it can meet the demands of heavy‑load trunk‑line transportation while delivering low‑energy consumption and low‑emission operations, significantly reducing fuel use and carbon emissions, thereby aligning precisely with the current trend toward green logistics in near‑shore shipping.

San Dian Shui New Energy has deeply cultivated the new‑energy marine‑vessel sector along the Yangtze River and in coastal waters, establishing a robust R&D framework for green, intelligent ships and their core technologies, as well as an advanced smart manufacturing system. Throughout the project’s implementation, San Dian Shui collaborated closely with Weiqiao’s technical and engineering teams, iteratively refining solutions for key modules such as hull structure and new‑energy propulsion systems, and systematically overcoming technical challenges to lay a solid foundation for high‑standard vessel construction.

Tong Yong, Marketing Director of San Dian Shui New Energy, stated that following the 400-TEU near‑shore electric vessel project, the successful launch of the Weiqiao 9,800‑DWT new‑build project further strengthens the company’s product portfolio in the near‑shore new‑energy vessel segment. San Dian Shui will remain committed to rigorous craftsmanship standards, exercising stringent oversight over construction safety, build quality, and delivery timelines to deliver high‑performance, environmentally friendly vessels.

Jia Mingyang, representing Shenzhen Weiqiao, stated that decarbonization and electrification have become irreversible trends in the shipping industry, and Weiqiao New Energy is steadily expanding its green fleet capacity. Following completion and delivery, these vessels will be deployed on Weiqiao’s core cargo routes for long-term operations, leveraging real-world performance data to demonstrate the dual economic and environmental benefits of new‑energy ships. At the same time, he expressed hope that this project will serve as a starting point for collaboration, enabling Weiqiao and San Dian Shui New Energy to broaden their partnership and jointly advance the construction of a large‑scale fleet of new‑energy vessels and the development of a comprehensive energy infrastructure for shipping, thereby setting a benchmark for the low‑carbon transformation of waterborne transport.

With the successful completion of the ship‑wide construction ignition ceremony, the vessel has officially entered the full‑scale construction phase. In the next stage, San Dian Shui New Energy will meticulously advance all phases of the project to ensure the ship is delivered on schedule and to the highest quality standards.
