Four ships worth over 68 billion yuan! The 'largest' luxury cruise ship order takes effect

On February 5th, Italian shipbuilding group Fincantieri announced that the order for four luxury cruise ships signed with Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH) has now come into effect. This will be the largest cruise ship ever built by Norwegian Cruise Holdings.
The new ship has a total tonnage of approximately 226000 tons and will be built by Fincantieri's shipyard in Monfalcone. The first ship is expected to be delivered in 2030, and the following three ships will be delivered in 2032, 2034, and 2036, respectively. Each cruise ship can carry 5100 tourists, including crew members, and can accommodate up to 8300 people. The new ship is designed according to the highest comfort and technical standards, and will also include sustainable development performance.
Fincantieri did not disclose the specific shipping price, only stating that the contract is "very important", meaning its contract value exceeds 2 billion euros (approximately 15.13 billion yuan). According to Reuters, the total value of this order is as high as 9 billion euros (approximately 68.121 billion yuan).
It is understood that these four new ships are part of the letter of intent signed between Norwegian Cruise Holdings and Fincantieri in April last year for the construction of eight new generation cruise ships. This is the largest new ship order in the history of Norwegian Cruise Holdings, with 8 cruise ships to be delivered between 2026 and 2036.
In addition to the four luxury cruise ships that have just come into effect, the eight letters of intent also include two 86000 ton cruise ships ordered for the Oceania Cruises brand, each capable of carrying 1450 passengers, to be delivered in 2027 and 2029 respectively; And to order two 77000 ton cruise ships for the Regent Seven Seas Cruises brand, each capable of accommodating 850 passengers, to be delivered in 2026 and 2029.
Norwegian Cruise Holdings is one of Fincantieri's loyal customers. At present, Fincantieri is building 5 cruise ships for Norwegian Cruise Holdings, including 4 169000 ton Prima Plus luxury cruise ships under its Norwegian Cruise brand. The first ship, the Norwegian Aqua, will be delivered in the coming months, while the other three are in different stages of design and construction; And the last 67000 ton Allura class cruise ship of its ocean cruise brand, the Allura, will be delivered this year.
It is reported that currently, the three major brands under Norwegian Cruise Holdings operate a total of 32 cruise ships with a total of 66700 beds. The company expects to add 15 cruise ships with up to 50900 beds by 2036.
As part of the sustainable development of Norwegian Cruise Holdings, the new generation of cruise ship design is expected to advance the company's decarbonization journey. The company is exploring solutions using green fuels. Since 2022, the company has completed testing of biofuel blends on multiple ships, using approximately 30% biofuel and 70% marine fuel. Recently, the Norwegian Dawn cruise ship, owned by Weizhen Cruise Holdings, obtained B30 sustainable biofuel blend fuel from Dutch supplier GoodFuels while docked at IJmuiden cruise terminal in the Netherlands.
