3.1 billion yuan! HJ Heavy Industries receives another order for 7900 TEU container ships

Recently, South Korean HJ Heavy Industries announced that it has signed a construction contract with European shipowners for four 7900 TEU environmentally friendly container ships. The new ships will be delivered gradually from the third quarter of 2026 to the end of 2027.
The total amount of this construction contract is 606.7 billion Korean won (approximately 450 million US dollars or 3.151 billion yuan), which is equivalent to a single ship price of 112.5 million US dollars. As a reference, Clarkson's data shows that the current price for a new 7500/8500 TEU traditional fuel container ship is $99 million, an increase of 6% compared to $93.5 million in the same period last year.
This type of ship has a total length of 272 meters, a width of 42.8 meters, and a speed of 22 knots. It adopts the latest environmentally friendly design and is equipped with cutting-edge equipment, which can save 40% of fuel. At the same time, this type of ship also adopts a methanol ready design, preparing for the future use of green methanol fuel. The design of this type of ship highlights high efficiency and adopts the DNV environmental symbol. It will be built in accordance with the third stage of ship design energy efficiency index and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Tier III standards.
The characteristic of this type of container ship is that, while carrying relevant environmental protection equipment, it also adopts a Twin Island structure (separating the living area and engine compartment, and moving the living area to the middle of the ship), which maximizes fuel efficiency and container loading capacity.
HJ Heavy Industries stated that the vessel types for this batch of orders are similar to the four 7900TEU environmentally friendly container ships that the company undertook from European shipowners in June this year. The company looks forward to further expanding the construction of bulk ship types to increase revenue by undertaking this order.
So far this year, HJ Heavy Industry has undertaken 8 7900 TEU class container ships with a contract amount of 1.2 trillion Korean won (approximately 890 million US dollars).
In recent years, HJ Heavy Industry, which has advantages in the field of container ship construction, has continuously developed relevant environmental protection technologies, and its environmental protection ship technology capabilities have been greatly improved. In May of this year, German asset investment management company MPC Capital and its partners successfully delivered all six 5500TEU environmentally friendly container ships reserved for methanol fuel ordered by HJ Heavy Industry, achieving great success in the environmental protection ship market.
In addition, in February 2023, HJ Heavy Industries signed a construction contract with HMM, South Korea's largest shipping company, for two 9000 TEU methanol powered container ships, with a total cost of 316.7 billion Korean won (approximately 247 million US dollars). In 2023, HJ Heavy Industries also collaborated with world-class marine engine manufacturer Wartsila to successfully develop an 8500 TEU environmentally friendly container ship equipped with carbon capture and storage (CCS) devices, committed to ensuring the technological capabilities of environmentally friendly ships that can achieve carbon neutrality ahead of schedule. In addition, HJ Heavy Industry has also accumulated technical strength in the development of LNG dual fuel and non ballast water vessels, methanol powered vessels, liquid hydrogen transport vessels, and other technologies that can achieve carbon neutrality ahead of schedule, laying the foundation for becoming a professional construction enterprise for environmentally friendly ships.
HJ Heavy Industry emphasizes that "possessing the world's highest level of technical capabilities in the field of environmentally friendly container ships is the secret to undertaking orders
HJ Heavy Industry officials stated, "The signing of this construction contract is due to the fact that our company's container ship construction capabilities and environmental technology capabilities are in line with the needs of the shipowner. The company will smoothly deliver the best quality ships to the shipowner according to the contract delivery period, in order to repay the shipowner's trust
