Samsung Heavy Industries names the 12th 13100TEU container ship built for Wan Hai Lines
On May 29, the naming ceremony for the 13,100 TEU container ship "WAN HAI A19 (照春輪)", built by Samsung Heavy Industries for Wan Hai Lines, was held at the Geoje shipyard.
This is the 12th of a series of 13 13,100 TEU container ships that Wan Hai Lines ordered from Samsung Heavy Industries between 2021 and 2022. It is scheduled for delivery in early June and will be deployed on Wan Hai Lines' Asia-West Coast South America route.
It is understood that the ship is 335 meters long, 51 meters wide, has a maximum draft of 16 meters, and a design speed of 22 knots. The new ship adopts an environmentally friendly and energy-saving design, including a new main engine, a fully balanced twisted spherical rudder, and a pre-swirl device in front of the propeller, which helps reduce resistance during navigation and achieves energy saving. In addition, this type of ship has already met the highest standards of the third phase of the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI), reducing carbon emissions and complying with the trend of green shipping.
In terms of navigation safety, this series of ships has obtained Smart Ship Notation certification. Through the establishment of a smart ship system, various monitoring systems and communication equipment are used to collect ship navigation data and equipment operation conditions, which helps to understand the ship's status in a timely manner and strengthen ship safety management.
The 13 container ships ordered by Wan Hai Lines from Samsung Heavy Industries are expected to be fully delivered in the second half of 2025. With the successive delivery of new ships, Wan Hai Lines' own fleet will be further expanded and upgraded, not only improving the company's shipping capacity but also strengthening its market competitiveness, which will help the company's operation and development on ocean routes and provide customers with more diversified and high-quality transportation services.
The latest data from Alphaliner shows that Wan Hai Lines currently operates 112 container ships, including 110 owned ships and 2 chartered ships, with a total capacity of 520,000 TEU, ranking 11th globally with a market share of 1.6%; in addition, Wan Hai Lines has 34 new ships under construction with a total of 380,000 TEU, accounting for 73% of the existing fleet. After all new ships are delivered, its total capacity will exceed that of Yang Ming Marine Transport, currently ranked 10th, entering the top ten globally.
