Kawasaki Heavy Industries names sixth LPG dual-fuel VLGC built for NYK
Recently, Kawasaki Heavy Industries held a naming ceremony for the "LUNA PATHFINDER," the newest LPG dual-fuel VLGC built for NYK Line.
This is the sixth LPG dual-fuel LPG carrier that NYK Line has ordered from Kawasaki Heavy Industries, following the delivery of the "LIBERTY PATHFINDER" in October last year. Like the previous five vessels, the new ship was built at Kawasaki Heavy Industries' Sakaide Works and will be long-term chartered to Astomos Energy for LPG transportation within Japan and globally.
The "LUNA PATHFINDER" adopts Kawasaki Heavy Industries' 86,700 cubic meter LPG/ammonia carrier design, increasing cargo capacity compared to previous 84,000 cubic meter LPG vessels. The ship is 229.90 meters long, 37.20 meters wide, 21.90 meters deep, has a full load draft of 11.65 meters, and a cargo tank capacity of 86,920 cubic meters.
The vessel is equipped with a dual-fuel engine using LPG and heavy oil, as well as a shaft generator. During normal navigation, the diesel generator can be shut down, allowing the ship to run almost entirely on LPG fuel. When using LPG fuel, compared to NYK Line's existing traditional fuel counterparts, it can reduce sulfur oxide emissions by over 95% and carbon dioxide emissions by over 20%.
In addition to LPG, the new vessel can also transport liquid ammonia. Ammonia is currently attracting attention as a potential means of achieving a decarbonized society in the future. If demand increases in the future, the vessel will also be able to handle liquid ammonia transportation.
