China's First! "Jiaolong" Manned Submarine Explores Arctic Ice Region
On September 26, the polar research icebreaker "Xuelong 2," which carried out China's 15th Arctic Ocean scientific expedition mission, returned to Shanghai.
With the support of the "Xuelong 2," the "Deep Sea No. 1" vessel, equipped with the manned submersible "Jiaolong," successfully completed China's first manned deep-sea dive in the Arctic ice region, marking a significant milestone in our nation's growing capabilities for deep-sea exploration and access.
The 15th Chinese scientific expedition to the Arctic Ocean, organized by the Ministry of Natural Resources, was jointly carried out by four vessels: the Xuelong 2, the Polar, the Deep Sea No. 1, and the Explorer No. 3. This expedition marks China's largest-ever scientific mission to the Arctic Ocean.
Preliminary research reveals that the density, biodiversity, and individual body sizes of benthic organisms in certain Arctic sea areas exhibit significant variations across spatial scales ranging from tens to hundreds of kilometers. This finding provides strong support for uncovering the spatial distribution patterns of polar deep-sea benthic life and assessing the impacts of climate change on deep-sea benthic ecosystems.

The "Jiaolong" manned submersible is China's first independently designed and integrated deep-sea manned vehicle tailored for operational tasks, capable of reaching a maximum diving depth of over 7,000 meters. Developed under the leadership of the No. 702 Institute, a subsidiary of China Shipbuilding Group, the device has successfully completed its research and sea trial missions, even setting a remarkable record by descending to a depth of 7,062 meters. This achievement firmly established China as the fifth country—after the United States, France, Russia, and Japan—to master large-depth manned deep-sea diving technology. In 2025, the submersible underwent another round of technological upgrades, making significant strides in areas such as energy efficiency, reduced consumption, and the localized substitution of key components.
As of now, the "Jiaolong" submersible has carried out diving missions in waters including the Pacific Ocean, the Indian Ocean, and the Atlantic Ocean. The success of the "Jiaolong" marks China's achievement in manned deep-sea scientific research and resource exploration capabilities, placing it at an internationally leading level.
