China's shipbuilding industry has maintained the world's No. 1 market share for 16 consecutive years.
The China National Association of the Shipbuilding Industry released the latest data, revealing that during the 14th Five-Year Plan period, China's shipbuilding industry saw rapid growth in its three key indicators, continuing to lead the world.
As of the end of June 2025, during the 14th Five-Year Plan period, China’s shipbuilding industry has collectively secured 64.2% of global new ship orders—up by 15.1 percentage points compared to the 13th Five-Year Plan period. This further solidifies China’s status as a major shipbuilding nation, with its market share remaining firmly at the top spot worldwide for the 16th consecutive year.
Among these, the volume of shipbuilding completions accounted for 51.7% of the global total, while measured in corrected gross tonnage—adjusted to reflect both ship prices and production value—it represented 47.2% of the world’s total, representing increases of 8.6 and 11 percentage points, respectively, compared to the end of the 13th Five-Year Plan period.
Li Yanqing, Secretary-General of the China Association of the Shipbuilding Industry, stated: "Over the past five years, we've seen a very distinct trend—significant progress has been made in intelligent and high-end products. Moreover, a series of our green products represent world-first developments."
During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, China’s shipbuilding industry delivered a batch of high-end vessel types, including 300,000-ton-class Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs), dual-fuel-powered Ro-Ro vessels for automobiles, and the country’s first domestically produced large cruise ship, the “Costa Venezia” (formerly known as “Adora Magic City”). Currently, at Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding, construction of the second domestically produced large cruise ship has already reached 85% completion.
Chen Gang, Chairman of Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding under China State Shipbuilding Corporation, announced that the second domestically produced large cruise ship will begin sea trials in May 2026 and is scheduled for delivery by December 2026.
China's shipbuilding industry, experiencing simultaneous growth in both quantity and quality, has also seen a notable improvement in corporate profitability. As of June 2025, the operating income profit margin for large-scale shipbuilding enterprises across the country reached 9.71%, marking a new historical high.
