Yangzi Mitsui Shipbuilding Delivers 82,500-DWT Bulk Carrier
At 9:00 a.m. on March 31, the next-generation 82,500-DWT green and environmentally friendly bulk carrier “UM KANDA,” built by Yangzijiang Mitsui Shipbuilding for a Japanese shipowner, was successfully delivered via electronic signature. That afternoon, the vessel cast off from the shipyard berth and commenced its maiden voyage.
The “UM KANDA” is the lead vessel of this series, with a total length of 229 meters, a molded breadth of 32.26 meters, a molded depth of 20.15 meters, and a design draft of 14.55 meters. It is classed by the Japan Classification Society. Mass cutting commenced on July 7, 2025, and the vessel successfully completed sea trials on March 21, 2026, with all test results exceeding the design specifications.
This series of vessels is designed to meet Tier III emission standards while incorporating a Methanol Ready configuration, laying the groundwork for future adoption of alternative fuels and aligning with the shipping industry’s green transition. Through extensive outfitting weight reduction and optimized structural design, the vessels’ cargo capacity has been increased by approximately 500 tonnes without compromising structural integrity, thereby further enhancing their operational economics.
